12/02/2013

Regarding my proposal (See full proposal below) I've decided to go with Propsoal 1: Litter, specifically in Ballyogan Dump/The Ballyogan area. Over the next week I'll be planning out how the page layout will look using http://www.balsamiq.com/ as well as go out and get images of the area for use on the site.

In class we were let to work on our blogs and plan for our CA's, so I worked on this weeks and last weeks blog and began planning on what the website could POSSIBLY look like.

First draft idea for the home page. Debating whether or not to have a top nav in the Header area or a side nav in the body area. Also debating over a 'back to top' button in the footer or another nav in the footer like I did in my previous site. Might decide to have a calender on the front page to easily view opening hours/if the dump is open or not. And of course, the obligatory paragraph w/ image on the page outlining the sites purpose.

I also looked through kuler to find a colour scheme that might fit the site, searching themes like; Litter, Garbage, Waste, Tidy, Clean, Recycle, etc... Still havn't found one that suits but I can worry about that after I have the layout of the site decided upon.

Just Examples of what I found:
=Clean Sky
=Ireland Tidy
=Rubbish
=Recycle at Work

Proposal 1: Litter
Reasons: To bring attention to how damaging litter has become in the local community. Convey information on the site regarding the sewage plant in Shankill/Killiney and the Dump in Ballyogan and just litter in general. Possibly an interview with one of the employees of the plant or the dump.
Link Pages: The Home Page would contain 2 main articles that outlines the theme of the site (litter) accompanied by pictures of the area that are examples of excessive littering. One page could go into detail about the Sewage Plant and another page could be about the Dump. There can also be a contacts page containing email address, contact form (/w validation working this time!) and a map. Finally a page dedicated to the video with a gallery of photos of the plant, dump and areas that are notorious for litter.
Video Clip/Pictures: For the video clip I was thinking of using the DMPT video to save time and should ensure one good quality video instead of splitting up my time making 2 videos. For pictures (as stated above) I’ll use pictures taken of the sewage plant, the dump and dirty areas.
Example sites: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/environment/environmental_protection/litter_law.html
This is one of the sites about littering about Ireland. It gives good information about littering and its laws but I find that it’s VERY text heavy. If I was to take anything from this site it would be the lesson to not use so much text in my site.
http://www.litter.ie/
I couldn’t actually find a site about littering that I liked that I’d like to edit, so I’m just going to make my own from scratch. Seeing that this site was made back in 2004, I decided it’d probably be best to look elsewhere for inspiration.
Possible interactive features: Form Validation, a Poll (possibly about what area you think is most littered?), a Calendar, interactive buttons, Google maps feature, ability to leave a comment on a picture/page.

Proposal 2: Music in Video Games.
Reasons: The main reason this topic is 2rd is only because I feel covering this topic is a bit too common and overdone. Regardless, it is one of my interests and I think I’d probably enjoy doing this the most.
Link Pages: Same as the other proposals, the main page would just give a general outline of what’s would be in the rest of the site. One page could contain the video along with a poll on what your favourite song from a game is. The next page could be A list of songs that have links to the song (either just the mp3 or a link to youtube).
Video Clip: For the video clip, I’m a little stumped. I could learn off a song on piano and just film myself playing or just go and get a video survey on what people’s favourite song from a game would be.
Example sites:
http://www.youtube.com/
Although it’s not an actual site dedicated to game music, the general layout of youtube is a good canvas on which to present the content of my site.
http://www.vgmusic.com/
This site has retro game music as its main focus. It looks VERY dated, thought I’m not sure if that’s intentional to fit with the years the music was made or if it’s just an ancient site. They have a search bar at the top so you can look for the game you’re looking for and have a comment feature, which are both things I could use for my site.
Possible interactive features: As before: calendar with events, interactive buttons, Google maps feature, ability to leave a comment on a picture/page and search bar.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Proposal 3: Local Gardaí
Reasons: To show information about the Gardaí, local Gardaí stations in the area, their location, common laws and misconceptions and just need to know details about all of the previously stated categories.
Link Pages: The home page would contain a general overview of what the rest of the site will contain and some brief information about the Gardaí and have the video. There are 2 local Gardaí stations I could do (one per page), Shankill and the one around the corner from IADT. Another page could contain laws, facts and misconceptions etc, and the final page would contain contacts information for local Gardaí stations.
Video Clip: The video could be a documentary about the two Stations mentioned above, possibly an interview with one of the officers and surveys on what people think of the Gardaí.
Example sites:
http://www.garda.ie/
Looking through the site it provides a lot of information and does what it sets out to do but I think style wise, it could do a lot better. A lot of the front page feels very claustrophobic. The site is pretty solid on a whole though but I’d like to try and put my own twist on it.
http://www.police.uk/
I decided to look up the uk’s police website but I found it was just a main page with a ton of links to other sites. It could have used information from those sites and applied them to their own site. However, the information on the other sites are quite good.
Possible interactive features: On the Gardaí site they have a daily update on traffic accident casualties; I’d like to do something like that but… less morbid. As stated in the previous proposal I’d implement things like the calendar with events, interactive buttons, Google maps feature, ability to leave a comment on a picture/page.
